In a tragic incident in Akungba, Akoko, Ondo State, a young boy accused of cocoa theft has lost his life at the hands of local residents. The circumstances surrounding his death have sparked controversy, with many questioning the validity of the allegations against him, as he was known in the community as a hardworking and responsible individual.
An anonymous local source revealed to our correspondent that the boy was merely bathing in a stream when he was apprehended and subsequently beaten to death.
The Ondo State Police Command has condemned this incident, emphasizing that jungle justice and self-help are illegal under Nigerian law. In a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Ayanlade Olayinka Olushola, titled “ONDO STATE POLICE COMMAND WARNS AGAINST TAKING LAWS INTO ONE’S HANDS – SUSPECT ARRESTED IN ALLEGED MURDER CASE AT AKUNGBA,” the police outlined the details of the case:
“The Ondo State Police Command, led by Commissioner of Police CP Adebowale Lawal, psc(+), mnips, wishes to inform the public about an unfortunate incident that occurred on September 20, 2025, at Akunmi Quarters, Akungba.”
“At approximately 2:30 PM, the police received a report of a young boy who had been severely assaulted after being accused of plucking cocoa pods from a farm. He was brought to the station in an unconscious state, and officers immediately directed that he be taken for urgent medical attention. Unfortunately, he was confirmed dead at the hospital around 5:36 PM.”
“The complainant has been promptly arrested, and the deceased’s remains have been deposited at the hospital’s morgue for autopsy. The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Akure, for a thorough investigation to ensure that justice is served.”
The Commissioner of Police has strongly condemned this tragic event and reiterated the importance of refraining from self-help or jungle justice in any situation. Citizens are encouraged to report all infractions, disputes, or criminal acts to the police and allow the legal process to unfold.
