Recent reports indicate that the Alaafin of Oyo is facing significant challenges that could lead to his dethronement, with at least six petitions filed against him before the Oyo House of Assembly.
These petitions, presented in less than a year of his reign, suggest that he may not enjoy the love and support of his people.
A statement by Sheriffdeen Ojon, titled “Alaafin of Oyo In The Eye of the Storm Faces Threat of Dethronement,” highlights this precarious situation, warning that: “If care is not taken, Oba Owoade, the Alaafin of Oyo, risks becoming the third Alaafin to be dethroned.”
He elaborated:
“Oba Ajaka was enthroned twice; he was initially overthrown by his brother Sango and later restored to the throne.”
“Alaafin Adeniran Adeyemi II ascended to the throne in 1945 but was dethroned and exiled in July 1954 due to political issues.”
“Oba Owoade ascended to the throne in 2025 and promptly encountered problems with the public and fellow monarchs in Yoruba land.”
“By 2026, the Oyo State House of Assembly reportedly received six petitions against the king, who had barely spent a year on the throne.”
“To be sincere, Oba Owoade has undermined the dignity of the throne of Alaafin due to his lack of adherence to the principles of Omoluabi; his character as Alaafin falls short of many people’s expectations.”
