Tragedy has struck Amaji village in Umuoyoro Community, Omuma Local Government Area of Rivers State, after a man identified as Abuchi allegedly stabbed his wife to death with a kitchen knife during a heated argument on their farm, leaving behind two children and a community in mourning.
The incident occurred on Thursday when the couple had gone to their farm together.
What began as a domestic quarrel reportedly turned fatal when the suspect allegedly produced a kitchen knife and attacked his wife, who died from her injuries.
A community source told said that it was the dying woman’s screams that alerted other farmers working nearby, who rushed to the scene and overpowered the suspect before handing him over to security operatives.
“People got to know about the incident when the woman screamed loudly. The scream attracted other villagers working around the farm. They rushed there, overpowered the man and restrained him,” the source recounted.
A security source, who spoke anonymously as he was not authorised to comment on the matter, said the suspect reportedly told investigators that he could not explain what came over him at the time of the attack.
The Rivers State Police Command confirmed both the incident and the arrest of the suspect.
The command’s spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, told our correspondent that the Commissioner of Police had ordered a full investigation into the matter.
“Yes, I can confirm the incident. The suspect has been arrested and the Commissioner of Police has ordered a detailed investigation to ensure timely justice,” she said.
The suspect has since been transferred to the Eberi Police Division in Omuma LGA, where he is being held pending the outcome of investigations.
