Tragedy struck in Ayede-Ogbese, Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State, as gunmen attacked two farmers, killing one of them.
The Ondo State Police Command confirmed the incident on Tuesday, describing it as a fatal assault along the Agunla Farm Road axis of the community.
Police spokesman, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, said the matter was reported around 9:30 p.m. on Monday by a concerned resident.
According to him, the victims were travelling on a motorcycle to their farm settlement when they were ambushed by unidentified assailants.
One of the farmers, identified as Ben Daniels, was shot dead, while his companion, James Unekwu, reportedly fled the scene.
The police said officers swiftly visited the area, evacuated the corpse and deposited it at a morgue for autopsy.
Unekwu has been placed under protective watch as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the attack.
Angered by the killing, youths in the community on Tuesday blocked the Akure/Owo highway in protest, causing traffic disruption before security operatives intervened.
