Operatives of the Edo State Police Command have arrested a medical doctor, Kingsley Dele, for allegedly possessing a firearm without authorisation in Obaretin community, Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State.
The suspect was reportedly apprehended on February 29, 2026, during a police operation in which a Beretta pistol was recovered.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, Eno Ikoedem, disclosed the arrest in a statement made available to journalists in Benin on Thursday.
Ikoedem said operatives of the Command Intelligence and Rapid Response Squad carried out the operation based on credible intelligence.
She added that the arrest is part of the ongoing efforts by the state Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, to tackle the spread of illegal firearms in Edo State.
“The command remains determined to combat the circulation of unauthorised weapons, which often fuel violent crimes, regardless of the social status or profession of those involved,” she said.
The spokesperson confirmed that the suspect would be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of investigations.
Ikoedem also reassured residents that the police command would continue to act proactively to safeguard lives and property, urging the public to provide timely information that could assist law enforcement in preventing crime.
