A Jos magistrate’s court on Monday sentenced 20-year-old John Bawa, an unemployed man, to two years in prison for stealing from and verbally abusing his mother.
The case was heard by Magistrate Irene Pati, who offered Bawa an alternative option of paying fines: N30,000 for theft and N50,000 for insulting his mother.
The prosecutor, Daniel Lengman, told the court that the complainant, Mr Lami, reported the matter to the Police Monitoring Unit on February 12.
Bawa was accused of taking N100,000 and several cooking pots, which he allegedly sold as scrap.
Lengman added that when his mother attempted to correct him, Bawa insulted her. The offence violates the Plateau Penal Code Law, the prosecutor noted.
