Gunmen have shot dead a Point of Sale operator identified simply as Daniel in the World Bank area of Owerri, the Imo State capital.
The victim, an indigene of Ndegwu in the Orogwe community, Owerri West Local Government Area, was attacked at his business location near the Everyday Supermarket on Sunday evening.
Sources said Daniel, said to be the only son of his family, had previously been robbed and was still recovering from the financial setback when the latest attack occurred.
According to a source who spoke on condition of anonymity, the gunmen accosted Daniel and demanded his money bag.
When he resisted, they shot him and fled with the cash.
A resident, Philip Dike, confirmed the attack and warned that PoS operators were being specifically targeted in the New Owerri and World Bank areas.
Dike said the deceased was stationed near the Everyday Supermarket when armed robbers shot him dead on Sunday night.
He called on the police to act swiftly to apprehend those responsible and bring them to justice, describing the attacks on PoS agents in the area as a growing and worrying trend.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Henry Okoye, said he would confirm the incident and revert but had not done so as of the time of filing this report.
