A Magistrate’s Court in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, has remanded a 30-year-old man, Oforbuike Damian, for allegedly killing his mother.
The suspect was arraigned on a single count bordering on murder.
Presenting the case, the Police Prosecutor and Senior State Counsel, David Njoku, informed the court that the incident occurred on March 19, 2026, at Ohatekwe village in Ukawu community, Onicha Local Government Area of the state.
He alleged that the defendant stabbed his mother, Mrs Onyema Damian, in the back with a knife, leading to her death.
Njoku told the court that the offence is punishable under Section 319 of the Criminal Code, Cap 33, Vol. 1, Laws of Ebonyi State, 2009.
The defendant, who appeared without a lawyer, was said to have admitted to the act, claiming it followed his mother’s refusal to bathe him.
He was quoted as saying that he could not clearly explain his actions but recalled attacking her over the disagreement.
In his ruling, the Chief Magistrate, Chinedu Agama, ordered that the accused be remanded in a correctional facility, noting that the court does not have the jurisdiction to try murder cases.
He further directed that the case file be forwarded to the Department of Public Prosecutions for necessary legal advice.
The matter was adjourned until April 9, 2026.
