A Nigerian national, Christian Promise, has died in police custody in West Delhi, India, triggering fresh concerns and an official probe into the incident.
Promise, aged 32, was said to have travelled to India on a student visa before his arrest on Sunday by a team of officers in the Rajouri Garden area over an alleged traffic violation.
Police sources disclosed that the arrest followed a crash involving the deceased’s scooter and a police motorcycle, during which he reportedly fell and sustained injuries.
He was further said to have made an attempt to flee the scene but stumbled again before being rearrested by the operatives.
While in transit to a police facility, the Nigerian reportedly complained of feeling unwell, prompting officers to convey him to Guru Gobind Singh Hospital. However, he was confirmed dead shortly after arrival.
In response, a magistrate court in New Delhi has ordered a thorough investigation to unravel the circumstances that led to his death.
Authorities also stated that an autopsy would be carried out once approval is secured from his family or representatives of the Nigerian mission in India.
