Suspected bandits have again struck in Plateau State, killing at least two residents and leaving many others wounded during a late-night attack on Pwomol village in Heipang District of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area.
The Sunday night raid, which occurred on April 5, threw the community into chaos as the attackers reportedly stormed the area under the cover of darkness, firing shots indiscriminately and setting homes and food storage facilities ablaze.
Confirming the incident, the National President of the Berom Youth Moulders Association, Dalyop Solomon Mwantiri, said the assailants, armed with sophisticated weapons, descended on the village around midnight, killing two youths and injuring several others who fled into surrounding bushes to escape the violence.
He described the assault as a disturbing recurrence, noting that it was the second attack on the community within one week, heightening fears among residents over the deteriorating security situation.
Mwantiri also revealed that one of the suspected attackers, identified as Suleiman and said to be from Fass in Riyom Local Government Area, was apprehended shortly after the incident.
According to him, the suspect was arrested near the Redemption Camp corridor linking Heipang and Kassa, with visible blood stains reportedly found on his body.
He has since been handed over to security operatives stationed at Sector 4 in Barkin Ladi.
The youth leader called on security agencies to intensify efforts to unravel the circumstances surrounding the attack, urging that the detained suspect be thoroughly interrogated to expose other accomplices.
He further lauded the swift intervention of the Special Task Force, Operation Enduring Peace, and appealed to residents to stay alert and cooperate with security agencies by providing timely information that could help prevent future attacks.
