Brig.-Gen. O. O. Braimah, a Brigade Commander of the Joint Task Force in Benisheikh, Kaga Local Government Area of Borno State, has reportedlyp been killed during a midnight attack by suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists.
Security analyst Brant Philip confirmed the development on Thursday, noting that the insurgents struck the military camp late Wednesday night, triggering large fires within the base.
“According to security reports, Commanding Officer O.O. Braimah was killed during the attack,” Philip said.
He further stated that Brig.-Gen. Braimah was the highest-ranking officer to be killed in Borno since the ambush that claimed the life of Brig.-Gen. Uba in late 2025.
Local sources reported that the coordinated attacks also claimed the lives of civilians, a member of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), security operatives, and several insurgents in both Benesheikh town and Pulka community in Gwoza Local Government Area.
A resident of Benesheikh, Malam Lawal, corroborated the report on Facebook, mourning the loss of the Army commander.
“Innalillahi wa Inna’illaihin raji’un. Boko Haram has again, unfortunately, succeeded in eliminating the commanding officer of Benisheikh. This tragic incident occurred last night when insurgents stormed the military formation in large numbers. May the souls of the fallen heroes rest in peace,” he wrote.
The attack underscores the persistent threat of insurgency in North-East Nigeria despite ongoing military operations aimed at degrading terrorist networks.
While the Nigerian Army has not officially commented on the death of Brig.-Gen. Braimah, military sources confirmed that clearance operations were immediately launched to track fleeing insurgents and secure the area.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety of military formations in the region and the growing audacity of insurgents, highlighting the urgent need for intensified security measures and community support for counterterrorism efforts.
