A suspected kidnapper, Alex Kehinde, has confessed to Delta State Police that he and an accomplice killed an 80-year-old man and extorted N2 million from the victim’s son after selling the man’s mobile phone.
The suspect made the confession in a video released by the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe. Kehinde said the plot was hatched after his accomplice suggested targeting the elderly man, who had contracted them for renovation work on his building.
According to Kehinde, they lured the man to the site on February 3, 2026, under the pretense of fixing a pipe. Speaking in pidgin English, he said, “We carry am go upstairs to show him pipe. We make him sit down. As he dey wan shout, we nor want make people hear, we come use foam cover him mouth and nose. He was shaking and we run downstairs, carry his phone, sell am, leave the bike for Ogbe-Ogonogo market.”
SP Bright Edafe provided further details, explaining that the victim had initially paid N200,000 for the renovation, but additional payments were demanded for hiring more workers.
“It now remained the suspect and his accomplice, who is still at large. According to him, they were looking for money and decided to kidnap the man,” he said.
The police officer added that after suffocating the victim with foam, the suspects took his motorcycle and phone.
They sold the phone for N30,000, inserted the victim’s SIM card into their own phone, and called the victim’s son, claiming his father had been kidnapped.
“After killing this man, they went ahead and collected N2 million from the son of the victim,” SP Edafe said, describing the incident as “pathetic and deeply saddening.”
Authorities said the accomplice remains at large and investigations are ongoing to apprehend all those involved in the crime.
The police urged the public to report suspicious activities promptly to help prevent such heinous acts and assist in securing the arrest of offenders.
This case highlights growing concerns about violent kidnappings in Delta State and the need for heightened vigilance in residential and commercial areas.
