The Osun State Government has removed Oba Gbenga Joseph Oloyede as the Apetumodu of Ipetumodu, bringing his reign to an abrupt end.
The development was announced on Tuesday in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, on behalf of the state government.
Alimi said the decision was reached after extensive consultations, legal scrutiny and subsequent approval by the State Executive Council.
He explained that the action was taken in line with the provisions of the Osun State Chiefs Law, as amended, alongside other regulations guiding traditional institutions in the state.
The government stated that the monarch’s removal was connected to his conviction in the United States over offences linked to COVID-19 fraud, for which he is currently serving a prison term.
According to the statement, “The decision followed due consultation, legal consideration and approval by the State Executive Council.”
It further disclosed that all symbols of authority earlier conferred on the monarch, including his staff of office, had been withdrawn with immediate effect.
The government also declared the Apetumodu stool vacant, noting that steps for the emergence of a new monarch would be communicated in line with laid-down customary and legal procedures.
Security agencies have been directed to maintain law and order in the community, while residents, kingmakers and other stakeholders were urged to remain calm and peaceful.
Ipetumodu, the headquarters of Ife North Local Government Area of Osun State, has been at the centre of attention following the monarch’s sentencing by a United States court in 2025 over the fraud case.
