The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed the death of a motorcyclist following an encounter with its personnel along the Iseyin/Oyo Road.
In a statement issued on Saturday in Ibadan, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, said the incident involved operatives of the Border Patrol Unit and a Fulani man riding a motorcycle.
According to the command, the deceased reportedly became violent, leading to a confrontation with the officers.
Olayinka stated that during the altercation, the man was hit and fell off his motorcycle.
He added that the victim was immediately taken to a medical facility, where he was later confirmed dead.
“An encounter occurred between officers of the Border Patrol Unit stationed along the Iseyin/Oyo Road and a motorcyclist. The individual became restive and violent, resulting in a confrontation.
“During the clash, he was struck and fell from the motorcycle. He was rushed to a hospital but was confirmed dead,” the statement read.
The police spokesperson disclosed that the Commissioner of Police had ordered the detention of all officers involved pending the outcome of an investigation.
He also said an autopsy had been directed to determine the exact cause of death.
Olayinka further revealed that the incident sparked a protest in Iseyin, which was, however, swiftly contained after residents were assured that justice would be served.
The development comes amid heightened public concern over police conduct, following recent incidents involving alleged misuse of force by security personnel in parts of the country.
