Anxiety has gripped the political space as the Federal High Court in Abuja commenced proceedings on the eligibility of former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest the 2027 presidential election.
The hearing comes barely 24 hours after Jonathan hinted at a possible return to the presidential race during an address in Abuja on Thursday.
The former president is expected to appear before the court in person as proceedings continue on Friday over the suit challenging his eligibility.
The development followed a rally by a group of supporters who marched to Jonathan’s residence, urging him to join the 2027 presidential contest.
Responding to the calls, Jonathan said leadership required patriotism, credible elections and commitment to national peace, while noting that he would consult widely before making any decision.
“Presidential race is not a computer game, but I have heard your appeal and I will consult widely,” he stated.
A video circulating online on Friday showed activities around the court premises as the matter was set for hearing.
The case has continued to generate widespread reactions amid growing speculation over Jonathan’s possible return to active presidential politics ahead of the 2027 general election.
