A former media aide to late ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, Bashir Ahmad, has cautioned former President Goodluck Jonathan against returning to active politics ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Ahmad said dragging Jonathan into what he described as a politically uncertain movement could damage the former president’s legacy and diminish the respect he currently enjoys both within and outside Nigeria.
In a post shared on X on Monday, the former presidential aide said Jonathan had already played a significant role in Nigeria’s democratic history, particularly through his peaceful transfer of power in 2015.
“Goodluck Jonathan has already played his role in Nigeria’s democratic journey and left office peacefully, earning respect both locally and internationally,” he wrote.
He argued that attempts to lure the former president back into partisan politics were driven more by desperation than national interest.
According to Ahmad, some political actors pushing for Jonathan’s return had realised that their movement lacked direction and widespread public support.
“I understand that those who are now seriously pushing and calling on former President Goodluck Jonathan to return to the political scene are doing so because they have finally realised that their movement lacks direction and the nationwide support needed to succeed,” he stated.
“After all the noise and alliances, they are beginning to see that their agenda is not gaining the momentum they expected.”
Ahmad further warned that involving Jonathan in what he called a failed political project would not produce meaningful results.
“Now, they want to drag Jonathan into a struggle that will not produce any meaningful result. We see this move as political desperation rather than genuine concern for the country,” he added.
