Suspected bandits have reportedly killed two persons during an attack on an illegal mining site in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The attack, believed to have been carried out by armed herders, occurred at Kedawa village on Sunday afternoon, throwing the community into panic.
Security sources disclosed that troops of Operation Enduring Peace swiftly mobilised to the scene following distress calls from residents and miners operating in the area.
A counter-insurgency expert, Zagazola Makama, quoting security sources, said the incident happened around 1:30 p.m. on May 11.
According to the report, troops attached to Sector 4, Sub-Sector 41 Gashish, responded immediately after receiving intelligence about the attack on illegal miners at the site.
On arrival, security operatives reportedly recovered the bodies of two victims identified as Napan Danjuma and Leba, while the attackers had fled before the troops reached the area.
The troops also rescued one injured victim during the operation.
The latest incident has heightened concerns over rising insecurity around mining communities in Plateau State, where attacks linked to armed groups and illegal mining activities have become frequent in recent years.
Security authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the attack as of the time of filing this report.
