The Adamawa State Police Command has begun a probe into a late-night gunshot disturbance in Lamurde Local Government Area, resulting in the arrest of six young men during a coordinated security patrol.
The arrests were carried out as part of reinforced surveillance operations introduced to prevent further escalation of tensions between the Chobo and Bachama communities.
In a statement released on Thursday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Suleiman Yahaya Nguroje, said officers on routine patrol responded after gunshots were allegedly heard around midnight between February 15 and 16 near the Cottage Hospital in the Kunduli area of Tingno, Lamurde.
He explained that the patrol team came across a group of youths at the scene who reportedly confronted security personnel with abusive and provocative comments, prompting their immediate apprehension.
The suspects were later handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Yola for detailed questioning.
Those taken into custody were identified as Abiola Ayuba, 27; Mark Yakubu, 22; Yamauyinzin Elias, 18; Gabriel Danladi, 22; Yunarwe Barnabas, 21; and Japheth Agai, 20.
According to the command, investigations are ongoing to determine whether the suspects had any involvement in the gunfire and to establish any connection with the simmering communal dispute in the area.
The Commissioner of Police, Dankombo Morris, appealed to residents to remain law-abiding and support security agencies in their efforts to preserve peace across Lamurde and adjoining communities.
Police further disclosed that some suspicious items, including charms, were recovered during the operation.
