The Ondo State Police Command has opened an investigation into a suspected plot to contaminate a major source of drinking water in Aponmu-Lona, located in Idanre Local Government Area.
A man identified as Philips Odefila was reportedly apprehended by residents while allegedly carrying out the act and was subsequently handed over to the police.
The Olu of Aponmu-Lona, Chief Babalola Bolujare, said the development comes amid rising tension following attacks on the community by suspected hoodlums.
He noted that the attackers had earlier invaded the area, destroying cocoa plantations and other valuable crops belonging to locals.
Bolujare disclosed that the community had petitioned the Inspector General of Police and the Department of State Services over the invasion.
He added that the police authorities had already directed an investigation into the attacks before the latest incident occurred.
The monarch explained that Odefila was caught during the alleged attempt to tamper with the community’s water supply, leading to his arrest. He added that two other suspects were later taken into custody in connection with the case.
He appealed to security agencies to ensure a comprehensive investigation and bring those responsible to justice.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Abayomi Jimoh, confirmed the arrest and said investigations were ongoing, but declined to specify the number of suspects involved.
