Maiduguri woman arrested by EFCC over naira mutilation video

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission have arrested a woman, Fatima Muhammed, in Maiduguri for allegedly mishandling the Nigerian currency after a video of the act went viral on social media.

The EFCC said in a statement on Wednesday that the suspect was apprehended on Tuesday, April 7, following the circulation of a TikTok video showing her using a N500 note to clean mucus from her nose.

“After the video gained attention online, our operatives traced and arrested the suspect within the Maiduguri metropolis,” the commission said.

The agency noted that Muhammed is currently in detention as investigations continue and that she would face prosecution once inquiries are completed.

The EFCC reminded the public that tampering with or misusing the naira is illegal, warning that anyone found violating the law would be held accountable.
