A Family Court sitting in Calabar, Cross River State, has sentenced a 46-year-old man, Imeh Sunday, to life imprisonment for the rape of his daughter.
The verdict was delivered on Wednesday by Justice Blessing Egwu of Family Court 2 after the court found the defendant guilty based on what it described as overwhelming evidence presented during the trial.
The prosecution of the case was supported by the Basic Rights Counsel Initiative, a non-governmental organisation advocating for the protection of children and vulnerable persons.
Reacting to the judgment, the Principal Counsel of the organisation, James Ibor, said the conviction underscored ongoing efforts to ensure justice for victims of sexual abuse in the state.
He noted that the organisation had recorded several convictions in similar cases in recent months.
Ibor commended the survivor, her family, law enforcement agencies, and the judiciary for their roles in the successful prosecution of the case.
He also acknowledged the contributions of the Cross River State Attorney-General, Ededem Charles Ani; the Commissioner of Police, Rashid Afegbua; as well as staff and volunteers of the organisation for their support throughout the trial and the victim’s recovery process.
