An Upper Area Court sitting in Mararaba, Nasarawa State, has dissolved the marriage between Aisha Salisu and her husband, Abubakar Isah, under Islamic law, citing prolonged abandonment and lack of marital affection.
Salisu had approached the court seeking the termination of the union on grounds of negligence, absence and absence of love, alleging that her husband had been away for six years.
She told the court that the marriage was contracted under Sharia law and that both parties resided in Anguwan Hashimu, Mararaba, within the court’s jurisdiction.
The petitioner further accused Isah of failing in his responsibilities as a husband, including providing for her basic needs such as healthcare, feeding and clothing.
She urged the court to dissolve the marriage, arguing that the prolonged absence had made the relationship untenable.
In his response, Isah did not dispute the claims, explaining that he had left home in search of better economic opportunities.
He, however, consented to the dissolution of the marriage and formally pronounced divorce in line with Islamic law.
Delivering judgment, the presiding judge, Adamu Haruna, granted the request and declared the marriage dissolved.
The court directed the petitioner to observe a three-month waiting period before entering into another marriage, in accordance with Islamic provisions.
