A political analyst and Executive Director of Development Specs Academy, Prof. Okey Ikechukwu, has described the recent defection of former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, to the Nigerian Democratic Congress as a calculated move for political survival ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Ikechukwu, who spoke on Tuesday during an appearance on Arise Television’s Morning Show, said Obi’s exit from the African Democratic Congress, alongside former Kano State governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, reflected what he termed a “strategic realignment” within Nigeria’s opposition space.
According to him, the move underscores the intense political pressure within opposition ranks, likening Obi’s decision to an urgent bid to remain relevant in a rapidly shifting landscape.
“Obi’s action can best be understood as a survival strategy in a highly competitive political environment,” he said, adding that the choice of a new platform signals an attempt to reposition ahead of the next election cycle.
The analyst noted that the emergence of the NDC as a rallying point for key opposition figures could reshape political calculations, particularly for the ruling All Progressives Congress and other parties.
He further stated that the development introduces new dynamics into the contest for 2027, as parties reassess their strategies in response to evolving alliances.
Ikechukwu also warned that fragmentation within opposition ranks could weaken their collective strength if not properly managed, stressing the need for cohesion to mount a credible challenge in the next general elections.
