Nigeria’s revered Pentecostal leader and founder of the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association, Evangelist Uma Ukpai, has passed away at the age of 80.
According to a statement issued by his family on Monday, October 13, the evangelist died on October 6, marking the end of an era for one of the most influential figures in Nigeria’s Christian community.
“A faithful soldier has been called to rest,” the family wrote, celebrating his lifelong dedication to evangelism and service to God.
For over six decades, Uma Ukpai devoted his life to spreading the gospel through fiery evangelism, teaching, and prophetic ministry. His impact reached millions of believers across Nigeria and beyond, earning him the title ‘father of Pentecostalism in Nigeria.’
The statement described him as “a spiritual general, founding father of faith, loving husband, devoted father, and mentor to many,” adding that his life was a testimony of God’s power and grace.
Born in Ohafia, Abia State, Uma Ukpai spent most of his life in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, where he established the headquarters of his evangelistic ministry. Every Wednesday, he ministered to thousands at the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association’s cathedral in Uyo.
Earlier this year, the evangelist celebrated his 80th birthday in grand style, receiving gifts worth ₦80 million from his followers. Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State hailed him as “God’s gift to Akwa Ibom,” while Pastor Enoch Adeboye, General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, described him as “extremely special” to the global Christian community.
Recalling their friendship of over 40 years, Pastor Adeboye said he drew strength from Ukpai during the most difficult moments of his life, including the loss of his son.
“If I follow the footsteps of a great man like that,” Adeboye said during Ukpai’s 80th birthday celebration, “I think when I grow a little older, I will want to be like Uma Ukpai.”
The family announced that details of the funeral arrangements will be made public in due course.
