The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has suspended several of its operatives following allegations that they extorted ₦10 million from Nigerian rapper, Oladipupo Oladimeji, popularly known as Oladips.
The agency’s spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, confirmed the suspension in a statement issued on Saturday, noting that the EFCC has launched a full-scale internal investigation into the incident.
Oladips had alleged that he was unlawfully detained for five days and compelled to pay ₦10 million to secure his release, despite no evidence of wrongdoing. He claimed the extortion occurred after his arrest alongside other suspected internet fraudsters.
Oyewale stated that the EFCC viewed the allegations as “grave and unacceptable,” stressing that the officers involved had been “relieved of their operational duties” pending the outcome of the inquiry.
“The grim picture painted by the artist does not represent the true image of the EFCC. We have commenced investigations, and the officers involved have been summoned to the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja,” Oyewale said.
He reiterated the agency’s commitment to integrity and accountability, adding that any operative found guilty of misconduct would face disciplinary sanctions.
“The Commission is serious about upholding its core values of integrity. Any staff found culpable will be dealt with accordingly. However, if the allegations are false and aimed at tarnishing the EFCC’s image, necessary measures will also be taken,” he added
The development follows public outrage after Oladips publicly accused EFCC operatives of extortion, drawing widespread calls for transparency and reform within the anti-graft agency.
