A Rivers State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has issued an interim order restraining the state’s Chief Judge, Justice Simeon Chibuzor Amadi, from receiving or acting on any correspondence from the Rivers State House of Assembly related to impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Nma Odu.
The order followed two separate suits filed by Governor Fubara and his deputy, marked Suit No. OYHC/7/CS/2026 and Suit No. OYHC/6/CS/2026, in which they challenged steps already taken by the House in the impeachment process.
Justice F. A. Fiberesima, who presided over the ex parte applications, granted interim injunctions restraining the Speaker of the House, Mr. Martin Amaewhule, 32 other defendants, and the Chief Judge from taking any further actions connected with the impeachment, including constituting panels to investigate alleged misconduct.
The interim orders will remain in force for seven days, with the matter adjourned to January 23, 2026, for further hearing.
The court also permitted service of the orders and related court documents on the defendants through substituted means, including pasting them at the gate of the Rivers State House of Assembly Quarters and serving the Chief Judge through any staff member at the High Court.
Justice Fiberesima emphasized that the injunction aims to prevent imminent actions that could undermine the main suits filed by the governor and his deputy.
