The Cross River State Police Command has uncovered eight decomposed bodies in a mortuary located in Isong Inyang Community, Akamkpa Local Government Area of the state, and taken a suspect into custody over the incident.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Sunday, disclosed this in a statement on Friday, explaining that the discovery was made at an embalmment centre situated along the Calabar–Ikom Highway on February 13, 2026.
He said operatives were alerted through credible intelligence about the presence of bodies at the facility around 11:56 a.m., prompting an immediate deployment of officers to the scene.
“On arrival, eight dried corpses were found inside the embalmment hall,” the statement read.
The police spokesman identified the arrested suspect as Sunday Ben Reuben, a native of Nsit Ibom in Akwa Ibom State, adding that preliminary findings show he is a mortician attached to Enghaut Company Mortuary in Akamkpa Local Government Area.
According to him, the suspect remains in custody while investigators work to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine if any laws were violated.
The command appealed to residents to stay calm and avoid spreading unverified information, assuring that further updates would be made available as the investigation unfolds.
