The Kwara State Police Command has taken into custody a 15-year-old boy, Gobri Yusuf, over the alleged killing of his guardian, identified simply as Akanbi, who was said to have adopted and raised him in Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State.
The suspect was accused of attacking the woman with several household items after an alleged earlier attempt to poison her reportedly failed.
The state Commissioner of Police, Adekimi Ojo, revealed the development on Friday while briefing journalists at the command headquarters in Ilorin.
According to the police boss, officers swung into action after receiving a distress call that a woman had been discovered in a pool of blood inside her residence.
Preliminary findings, he said, suggested that the teenager, who lived with the deceased, allegedly carried out the attack while the woman was bathing.
Ojo explained that the suspect was believed to have concealed himself behind a door before ambushing the victim and striking her with different household objects.
Items recovered from the suspect included a frying pan, a weighing scale, a kitchen spatula and knives, which investigators suspect were used in the assault.
The commissioner added that the suspect reportedly admitted during questioning that he carried out the attack, claiming that lingering resentment towards the deceased influenced his actions.
He further disclosed that after the incident, the teenager allegedly changed his clothes and left the house under the pretext of running an errand.
The suspect was also said to have contacted the deceased’s husband afterwards, prompting him to return home where he discovered his wife dead.
Ojo confirmed that the teenager remains in police custody as investigations into the case continue.
