The Nasarawa State Police Command has arrested a suspected kidnapper and recovered weapons during a security operation in Keana Local Government Area of the state.
The arrest was made after police operatives raided a hideout believed to be used by a kidnapping gang at Gidan Akuya Village.
In a statement released on Sunday, the command’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ramhan Nansel, said the operation was carried out based on actionable intelligence provided by the State Intelligence Department.
According to him, the suspects tried to escape when they noticed the approaching operatives but were swiftly pursued by the police, leading to the arrest of one of them.
He identified the suspect as 43-year-old Jibril Yunusa, noting that a search conducted at the hideout led to the recovery of an AK-47 rifle, an empty magazine and a locally made rifle.
Nansel further stated that the suspect reportedly admitted during interrogation to being involved in several kidnapping incidents around the Keana and Awe areas of the state and had supplied investigators with useful information to support ongoing inquiries.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Shetima Jauro Mohammed, has meanwhile ordered officers to intensify efforts to track down other members of the gang who fled during the operation.
The police commissioner also praised the operatives for their professionalism and reiterated the command’s determination to curb criminal activities and safeguard lives and property across Nasarawa State.
