A tragic incident has unsettled residents of Nwang Village in the Ekajuk community of Ogoja Local Government Area, Cross River State, following the alleged murder of a young woman, Moshie Igu, by her partner, Malime Ejor.
The incident was said to have taken place in the early hours of Saturday at about 6 a.m., leaving the community in grief and anger as locals call for justice.
Sources within the community informed PUNCH Metro that the suspect, aged about 35, allegedly attacked the 26-year-old woman on a farm after a disagreement reportedly linked to allegations of infidelity.
An eyewitness, who requested anonymity, recounted that attempts to intervene proved futile as the suspect had already inflicted severe injuries on the victim before help arrived.
“We heard shouting and rushed over, but by then he had already attacked her with a machete,” the source said.
“There was little we could do to stop it. Afterward, some youths subdued him and handed him over to security personnel.”
Findings revealed that the confrontation between the couple escalated during a heated exchange over alleged unfaithfulness, which eventually turned violent and led to the woman’s death.
The spokesperson for the Cross River State Police Command, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, confirmed the development on Sunday, noting that the suspect had been arrested and an investigation was underway.
“The suspect is in our custody, and we have commenced a thorough investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident,” he said.
Eitokpah disclosed that officers promptly responded to the report, apprehended the suspect, and prevented an angry mob from carrying out jungle justice.
“Our operatives moved swiftly to the scene upon receiving the report. The suspect was arrested and rescued from mob action. He remains in custody while investigations continue,” he added.
He further explained that steps were being taken to deposit the remains of the deceased at the General Hospital mortuary in Ogoja, while the case would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further inquiry.
The incident comes shortly after a similar case in Ibadan, Oyo State, where a 29-year-old man, Quadri Mohammed, allegedly killed his girlfriend, Precious Mogaji, prompting a police investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.
