The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has approved the restructuring of the Police Monitoring Unit as part of efforts to strengthen discipline and operational efficiency within the Force.
The development was disclosed on Monday in a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Placid.
Placid said the reorganisation formed part of ongoing institutional reforms aimed at repositioning the unit to effectively carry out its core responsibilities.
According to him, the restructuring has streamlined and reinforced the unit to enhance proactive monitoring, intelligence-led inspections and real-time supervision of personnel and operations across commands and formations.
He added that the new framework harmonises key monitoring and investigative functions in line with the Force’s broader reform agenda.
The police spokesman explained that the move was targeted at promoting professionalism, accountability and transparency, noting that the unit would play a pivotal role in identifying operational gaps and enforcing standards across all levels.
As part of the changes, the IGP also approved a leadership transition for the unit.
Deputy Commissioner of Police, Aliyu Abubakar, has been appointed to head the restructured Monitoring Unit.
Before his appointment, Abubakar served as DCP in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department in both the Federal Capital Territory and Rivers State commands.
He is credited with contributing to major investigations and advancing efforts to improve policing methods and operational performance.
