Local vigilante operatives in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, have foiled an attempted vandalism and robbery attack on a newly installed 132KVA power substation located at Temidire/Ajeja along Ikirun Road.
It was gathered that the suspected hoodlums stormed the facility armed with dangerous weapons and electrical tools allegedly intended for dismantling and stealing components of the installation.
Sources told PUNCH Metro that the suspects had already begun operations at the substation before members of the local vigilante group, acting on intelligence, swooped on the scene.
The suspects reportedly fled after encountering the vigilantes, narrowly escaping arrest in the process. Some of the tools allegedly brought for the operation were, however, abandoned at the scene.
A member of the vigilante group, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the operatives confronted the suspects before they escaped.
“We engaged them and they fled the area, abandoning some of their tools. We are confident they will be apprehended,” the source said.
Meanwhile, chiefs from the palace of the Soun of Ogbomosoland later visited the substation to assess the situation and obtain first-hand information about the incident.
The incident comes amid growing concerns over repeated attacks on power infrastructure and other public facilities across parts of the country.
