Former governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in Rivers State, Tonye Cole, has withdrawn from the party’s governorship primary ahead of the 2027 election.
Cole announced his decision in a statement issued on Wednesday, saying the move was made in the interest of peace, reconciliation and party unity after wide consultations with stakeholders.
The APC chieftain said he remained committed to democratic values and strong political institutions, pledging to support whoever emerges as the party’s flagbearer at the end of the exercise.
He also expressed appreciation to party members, youths, women groups, elders and supporters across the state for standing by him throughout the political process.
According to him, the decision to step down was reached after “deep reflection” and was guided by the need to protect the stability and progress of the party in Rivers State.
“I have taken the decision, in the overriding interest of party unity, peace and collective progress, to respect the supremacy of the party and withdraw from the forthcoming primaries,” he stated.
Cole further urged his supporters to remain calm and cooperate fully with the leadership of the party as preparations intensify for the 2027 general elections.
He added, “Let us unite and work together to secure victory for our President, our party and all APC candidates in the 2027 general elections.”
