Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has announced his resignation from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing his opposition to the emergence of Atiku Abubakar as the party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 election.
Lawal disclosed on Monday that he could no longer remain in the party following the outcome of the ADC presidential primary, which he alleged was manipulated in favour of Atiku.
The former SGF claimed that the primary election process lacked credibility and insisted that he would not be part of what he described as a political machinery designed to secure Atiku’s victory in the next presidential election.
According to Lawal, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains a better option for Nigeria than Atiku. He further criticised the former vice president, accusing him of incompetence and alleging that his political approach is influenced by ethnic and religious considerations.
Lawal stated that his decision to leave the ADC was based on principle and his conviction that Atiku should not be entrusted with the nation’s highest office.
