A yet-to-be-identified man is currently in police custody in Ughelli, Delta State, following the alleged killing of a driver employed by Delta Line, the state-owned transport service, in a road rage confrontation that spiralled fatally out of control.
The deceased, whose identity had yet to be officially released as of press time, was said to have been conveying passengers along the Asaba–Warri route when his bus sideswiped the suspect’s brand new Toyota Sienna, damaging the vehicle’s side mirror.
Rather than stop to assess the damage or exchange pleasantries with the aggrieved vehicle owner, the Delta Line driver allegedly sped off, a decision that would prove fatal.
Eyewitness accounts indicated that the enraged suspect gave the driver a fierce chase through Ughelli town, eventually cutting him off opposite SG Jones along the road.
Undeterred, the Delta Line driver attempted to escape through an adjacent lane, but the suspect allegedly caught up with him, forcibly dragged him out of the commercial bus and a physical struggle ensued between both men.
In the midst of the altercation, the driver suddenly collapsed.
Sympathisers at the scene swiftly conveyed him to a nearby hospital, where an attending physician pronounced him dead on arrival.
The suspect was subsequently apprehended and handed over to police authorities in Ughelli, where he remains in custody pending the conclusion of investigations.
Attempts to obtain an official reaction from the Delta State Police Command proved unsuccessful as the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, had yet to respond to enquiries as of the time of filing this report.
