The Benue State Police Command has taken into custody a mortuary attendant, identified as Amaobi, over allegations of tampering with a corpse in Agwabi, Buruku Local Government Area of Benue State.
The suspect was reportedly arrested on Friday after residents spotted him carrying what appeared to be a human limb, believed to have been removed from a body kept in the mortuary under his care.
Eyewitness accounts indicated that the incident triggered panic when the attendant allegedly walked into a local shop with the body part, prompting outrage among community members.
Youths in the area were said to have intervened, apprehending him before notifying security personnel, who subsequently took him away for further questioning.
In his statement to authorities, the suspect reportedly claimed his action was intended to draw attention to unresolved issues at the mortuary.
He was said to have explained that several unclaimed bodies, allegedly linked to past security operations, had remained in the facility for an extended period, and he sought government intervention to address the situation.
As of the time of filing this report, the police had yet to release an official statement, but investigations into the incident are said to be ongoing.
