Operatives of the Ondo State Police Command have disrupted a suspected human trafficking syndicate in Okitipupa, rescuing a 21-year-old woman allegedly taken to Côte d’Ivoire for exploitation.
The command’s spokesperson, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, made this known on Monday, stating that the operation was conducted under the directive of the Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Lawal.
According to the statement, the case came to light on April 13, 2026, after the victim’s mother lodged a complaint at the Okitipupa Police Division, alleging that her daughter had been misled and taken abroad for a supposed job opportunity.
Police investigations indicated that the victim was transported out of Nigeria in February by suspected traffickers who promised her legitimate employment but later forced her into prostitution.
“She was subjected to degrading conditions and compelled into sexual activities. The victim also disclosed that substances were allegedly administered to manipulate and control her and others,” the statement said.
The police further revealed that the victim escaped from captivity on April 6 and reached a nearby settlement, where she was able to contact her family for assistance.
“She subsequently returned to Nigeria on April 11 and was immediately taken to a medical facility in Okitipupa for treatment due to the ordeal she passed through,” the statement added.
Two suspects have since been apprehended in connection with the incident, while efforts are ongoing to track down another accomplice still at large, as the police reaffirmed their commitment to prosecuting all those involved and cautioned residents to verify foreign job offers before accepting them.
