The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a police officer captured in a viral video allegedly threatening to kill residents who record him while carrying out his duties.
The command identified the officer as Assistant Superintendent of Police, ASP Newton Isokpehi.
In a statement issued by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Finance and Administration, Ngozi Ezeabata, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, the command said the officer was promptly identified and taken into custody following a review of the video circulating on social media.
The statement noted that disciplinary proceedings had already commenced against the officer in line with the ethics and operational standards of the Nigeria Police Force.
According to the command, the officer has also undergone a drug test as part of ongoing investigations aimed at establishing the circumstances surrounding the incident.
ASP Isokpehi was seen in the viral footage allegedly warning that he would kill anyone filming him and claimed that even the Inspector-General of Police, who authorised citizens to record officers on duty, would attend their burial.
Reacting to the development, Orutugu condemned the officer’s conduct, describing it as unprofessional and unacceptable.
He reiterated that the police force remained a disciplined institution that would not tolerate misconduct, abuse of office, incitement or any action capable of eroding public trust.
The command assured residents of Anambra State and the general public that the outcome of the disciplinary process would be made public, adding that any officer found culpable would face appropriate sanctions in accordance with police regulations and the law.
It also urged officers and personnel of the command to remain professional, emotionally balanced and respectful while discharging their duties, especially at a time when public scrutiny of law enforcement activities remains high.
