The renowned Fuji musician, Alhaji Abass Akande, popularly known as Obesere, endured a violent attack on Friday during a burial ceremony at the government field in Okitipupa, Ondo State. The event, intended for mourning and celebration, descended into chaos when a group of armed hoodlums stormed the gathering, targeting Obesere and his band who were set to entertain guests.
According to multiple eyewitnesses, including Bosede Akinyemi, “It was a truly disgraceful act. A gang of local thugs caused serious disturbance, specifically targeting Obesere and his band while they were entertaining guests.” The thugs not only attacked the star but also vandalized expensive musical equipment, sending guests fleeing in panic.
Obesere recounted the ordeal: “During the attack, I was beaten, and my shoulder was dislocated as a result of the struggle. I was also struck with a knife while attempting to get into the car; I cannot confirm a stabbing wound, but I sustained several blows and am in significant pain.” He further revealed that the hoodlums overpowered him and escaped with a bag containing money, while another group continued to assault him despite his attempts to placate them with cash.
The attack did not spare the star’s band, as one member was allegedly stabbed while trying to fend off the attackers. Additionally, the group made away with valuable items including a gold chain, a handset, and a wristwatch. The chaos escalated further when Obesere’s manager suffered a hand injury after being stabbed with a broken bottle during the melee.
Local authorities, including the Chairman of Okitipupa Local Government Area, Hon. Andrew Ogunsakin, condemned the violence. “I received the news of the unfortunate mistreatment meted out to Abass Akande Obesere and his team with deep disappointment and utmost distaste. This incident is unacceptable and does not reflect the values we uphold as a people. I will be personally reaching out to Obesere and his team to convey our regrets. We are looking into the matter thoroughly to ensure such an incident does not repeat itself,” he stated.
The Ondo State Police Command responded immediately, confirming the arrest of two key suspects: Michael Abbey, alias “Emir,” and Oniye Oke. Police spokesperson, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, explained, “Further investigations revealed that on 21st November 2025, a group of suspected hoodlums led by one Michael Abbey, popularly known as ‘Emir,’ allegedly attacked the musician while he was performing. The suspects reportedly stole a bag containing N4,000,000, as well as a gold chain, handset, and wristwatch.” Police also recovered N479,100 as part of the stolen proceeds and assured that the hunt continues for other fleeing members of the gang.
DSP Ayanlade praised the prompt action of security operatives and credited the Inspector-General of Police for strategic support, reiterating that such acts of hooliganism and thuggery will not be tolerated—especially as the festive season approaches.
Obesere expressed gratitude for the assistance of those who intervened and praised the timely attention from local security personnel and health services. He promised to provide further updates as investigations continue.
Community leaders, event organizers, and the police have called for stricter measures to safeguard performers and guests, urging the public to embrace peace and decrying any violence at social functions.
