At least seven residents have been killed following a late-night attack by armed assailants on Bong village in Doemak District of Qua’an Pan Local Government Area, Plateau State.
The attack occurred on Friday night when the gunmen reportedly stormed the community while most residents were asleep. Eyewitnesses said the attackers moved from house to house, leaving several people injured and others unaccounted for.
Survivors described the assailants as heavily armed, noting that they struck quickly before fleeing the area under the cover of darkness. Women, children and elderly residents were said to be among the most affected.
A resident of the area, Justin Mari, told reporters that the number of casualties could increase as some villagers remain missing.
“As of now, more than seven people have been confirmed dead. Many others are injured, and several residents are still unaccounted for,” he said.
The attack was confirmed by Danaan Cletus Sylvanus, Director of Press and Publicity to the Chairman of Qua’an Pan Local Government Council, Christopher Audu Manship. He noted that while the incident had been verified, the exact death toll was still being determined.
According to him, the council chairman has strongly condemned the attack and is working with security agencies to ensure those responsible are apprehended and prosecuted.
He added that the local government would continue to update the public as investigations and security operations progress.
The incident comes amid ongoing security challenges in Plateau State. Earlier reports indicated that troops of the Nigerian Army’s 3 Division, operating under Joint Task Force Operation Enduring Peace, had disrupted a planned attack in another part of the state, neutralising several suspected bandits and recovering weapons during an operation in Wase Local Government Area.
The latest assault has heightened concerns over the persistent insecurity facing rural communities in Plateau State, where residents have repeatedly fallen victim to violent attacks.
