Emirates Airline has announced it will no longer permit passengers to use power banks during flights, citing growing safety concerns associated with lithium battery incidents in aviation. The new regulation takes effect from October 1, 2025, across its entire fleet.
In a statement on Tuesday, the Dubai-based carrier stressed that the decision followed a detailed safety review that highlighted the fire risks posed by portable chargers.
“Using any kind of power bank is prohibited onboard Emirates flights, effective from October 1, 2025,” the airline was quoted as saying by Gulf News.
While passengers will still be allowed to bring a single power bank rated under 100Wh in their carry-on luggage, Emirates clarified that the devices must remain unused throughout the journey. They cannot be connected to charge phones or recharged via the aircraft’s power outlets.
The airline further outlined storage requirements: power banks must be kept in the seat pocket or under the seat, must clearly display their capacity rating, and remain strictly prohibited in checked baggage.
Emirates reassured customers that every seat is equipped with personal charging ports, but urged travelers to fully charge devices before long-haul journeys.
Aviation experts note that lithium-ion batteries, commonly used in portable chargers, can overheat or catch fire if damaged, a process known as thermal runaway. By restricting their in-flight use, Emirates says cabin crew will be better prepared to handle emergencies without compromising passenger safety.
“Safety remains our highest operational priority,” the airline emphasized, adding that the updated rules are designed to reduce fire risks while ensuring passengers retain access to alternative charging options onboard.
