The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has officially declared that Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), is medically fit to stand trial and that his ailment is not life-threatening.
This conclusion was reached by an NMA-appointed medical panel ordered by the Federal High Court amid conflicting medical testimonies from both the prosecution and defense.
Justice James Omotosho, presiding over the terrorism trial in Abuja, relied on the panel’s report submitted October 13 and ruled that Kanu is capable of continuing his defense.The court scheduled the commencement of Kanu’s defense for October 23rd, 2025, granting him six consecutive days to present and close his case.
Additionally, the court granted a private consultation session between Kanu and his legal team on October 22 to ensure confidentiality, due to fears of possible surveillance within the Department of State Services (DSS) facility. The trial, which has been adjourned a few times, now appears set to resume and progress based on these new medical findings, addressing concerns that had previously delayed proceedings.
