The Federal Government of Nigeria has issued new guidelines on the proper recitation of the national anthem at official functions, underscoring a focused approach to national symbols. According to a directive released through the National Orientation Agency (NOA) on Thursday, Nigerians are now required to sing or recite only the first stanza of the national anthem during official events.
The guidelines specify that the full three stanzas of the anthem are reserved for five special national occasions: Independence Day, Presidential Inauguration, Armed Forces Remembrance Day, Democracy Day (June 12), and the Inauguration of the National Assembly. On these significant days, the entire anthem should be recited or sung to reflect the depth of national pride and solemnity.
Additionally, the third stanza of the anthem is to be recited as a national prayer at the beginning of events, while the National Pledge is to be recited at the conclusion. This structured recital aims to reinforce patriotic respect and proper ceremonial protocol across the country.
The directive aligns with the recent reintroduction of the old national anthem “Nigeria, We Hail Thee,” signed into law last May by President Bola Tinubu, replacing the long-used anthem “Arise, O Compatriots.” The reintroduced anthem is intended to emphasize service to the nation and unity among Nigerians despite cultural differences.
