The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has rejected the promise by Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi to serve only one term if elected president in 2027.
Speaking on the issue, ACF National Secretary Tukur Baba described the pledge as unnecessary, undemocratic and contrary to the spirit of constitutional democracy. According to him, leadership positions should be determined by voters based on performance rather than regional power-sharing arrangements.
Peter Obi had recently stated that he would spend only four years in office and hand over power to the North, insisting that a committed leader could make meaningful changes within a single term.
However, Baba argued that such a promise could deny Nigerians the opportunity to re-elect a performing president. He maintained that if a leader delivers good governance, improves security and boosts the economy, citizens should have the freedom to decide whether that person deserves another term.
The ACF official also warned against excessive emphasis on regional and ethnic considerations in politics, saying it could deepen divisions in the country and weaken democratic principles.
Despite its criticism of Obi’s position, the forum stressed that it does not endorse or oppose any presidential candidate. Baba noted that the organisation’s primary interest remains good governance, security, economic growth and the welfare of Nigerians.
The forum also expressed dissatisfaction with the administration of President Bola Tinubu, describing its overall performance as disappointing. Baba cited rising insecurity, economic hardship, inflation and the increasing cost of living as major concerns facing citizens.
According to him, despite changes in the nation’s security architecture and several policy reforms, many Nigerians are yet to feel positive impacts. He argued that insecurity, kidnappings and bandit attacks continue to affect several parts of the country.
The ACF concluded by urging political leaders to focus on delivering effective governance and addressing the challenges confronting Nigerians rather than engaging in divisive political rhetoric ahead of the 2027 elections.
