Israeli forces have seized control of the historic Beaufort Castle in southern Lebanon, marking their deepest military advance into the country in more than two decades amid escalating tensions with Hezbollah.
The medieval fortress, situated on a strategic hilltop near Nabatiyeh, has witnessed intense clashes between Israeli troops and Hezbollah fighters in recent days, alongside sustained air raids across parts of southern Lebanon.
In a statement, the Israeli military said its troops launched operations around the Beaufort Ridge and the nearby Suluki Valley with the aim of dismantling Hezbollah positions and eliminating what it described as direct threats to Israeli civilians.
The military added that it remained prepared to broaden the scope of the operation if circumstances required.
The latest development comes despite a ceasefire agreement that officially took effect on April 17. Reports indicate that Israeli forces have advanced beyond the Litani River and are now positioned approximately five kilometres from Nabatiyeh, one of the largest cities in southern Lebanon.
The incursion is regarded as Israel’s most significant ground advance into Lebanese territory in over 25 years, raising fresh concerns about the possibility of a wider regional conflict.
