On November 4th, Endurance Udeke, a resident of Periwinkle Estate in Lekki Phase 1, has died after jumping from a four-storey building during an operation conducted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The EFCC operation targeted suspected internet fraudsters living within the estate, resulting in the arrest of four suspects.
According to the EFCC statement, Udeke and another resident of apartment W6a became aware of the raid and attempted to escape arrest by jumping from the building. Unfortunately, Udeke sustained fatal injuries and died despite immediate medical interventions aimed at saving his life. The other resident survived the fall, received hospital care, and has since been stabilized.
The Commission emphasized that its operatives had no physical contact with Udeke before the incident, describing his action as tragic and unnecessary. “The Commission is shocked at the suicidal action of the deceased. There was no contact between officers of the Commission and the deceased before the unfortunate incident,” the EFCC stated. The case has been handed over to the police for further investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.
The EFCC also urged the public to remain calm and cooperate with lawful operations, insisting that raids are conducted in accordance with due process. “While we await the outcome of the investigation, it is important to remind the public that no one with nothing to hide has reason to be afraid of EFCC sting operations,” the agency noted.
This incident adds to the scrutiny faced by the EFCC following several controversial raids within recent months. Despite criticism, the anti-corruption agency maintains that its operations are crucial to Nigeria’s efforts to combat cybercrime and financial crimes. The Commission extended its sympathy to the family of the deceased and reaffirmed that its activities are conducted lawfully and transparently.
