Amid growing international criticism of Nigeria’s handling of religious freedom, U.S. Senator Ted Cruz has sharply condemned the Nigerian government, claiming it is “well aware of policies fueling Christian persecution” and instead chooses to “manipulate the media” rather than take substantive action.
In a recent statement, Senator Cruz accused the authorities in Abuja of intentionally sidestepping both domestic and global concerns about the plight of Christians, particularly in regions where violent attacks and discriminatory laws have been documented.
“The Nigerian government is not ignorant. They are perfectly aware of the policies and social currents that are putting Christian communities at risk,” Cruz said, emphasizing that repeated warnings from international observers and rights advocates continue to be ignored.Speaking at a forum on religious freedom, Cruz alleged, “What we’re seeing is calculated media manipulation. Rather than face up to the reality and work to protect religious minorities, there’s a constant effort to downplay or obscure the facts. It’s not just neglect—it’s active distortion of the truth.”
The senator referenced recent reports by advocacy groups and U.S. agencies detailing incidents of church attacks, abductions, and government actions seen as indirectly encouraging or enabling religious violence. “We cannot pretend this is mere oversight. There is a pattern, and it demands honest reckoning both from Nigeria’s leaders and the international partners who engage with them,” Cruz insisted.
Despite mounting international pressure, the Nigerian government has continued to maintain that it is taking all necessary steps to safeguard all citizens, regardless of faith. However, critics like Cruz argue that these reassurances fall short of addressing the root causes or changing the realities on the ground.
“Unfortunately, when governments use their platforms to misinform or distract, the public suffers, and those who are most vulnerable become even less visible,” he said.
Cruz called for renewed focus on policy reform, transparency, and concrete action, appealing to both Nigerian officials and allies in the global community to hold Abuja accountable. “Lip service and image management aren’t enough when lives and freedoms are at stake,” he said.
