The Nigerian Army has firmly denied allegations circulating on social media and certain news platforms that it is carrying out a compulsory recruitment drive targeting 10,000 Nigerian youths. The Army described the reports of forced enlistment as “fake news,” urging the public to disregard misleading claims and rely only on official communications channels for accurate information.
The false claim originated from a site called Spynigeria.NG, suggesting that the Army would enforce compulsory recruitment if young Nigerians failed to voluntarily enlist. The fraudulent report triggered concerns among parents, youths, and civil society groups, further amplified on Facebook and other online platforms, where numerous posts claimed that military service would soon be mandatory for citizens aged 18 and above.
In response, the Nigerian Army issued a statement clarifying its stance. “We categorically state that reports on compulsory recruitment are completely unfounded and do not represent any aspect of our current practices,” a military spokesperson said on Friday. “The recruitment process for prospective soldiers is thorough, voluntary, and transparent. All applications are processed according to established guidelines, and no Nigerian will be forced to serve against their will.”
The Army explained that recruitment notices are always shared through official platforms and stressed that applicants must meet strict eligibility criteria, including age restrictions, medical fitness, and a good character record. “Anyone interested in joining the Nigerian Army should consult our official website or designated recruitment offices. We advise the public to ignore unofficial posts and verify all information before acting on it,” the spokesperson added.
