In a decisive response to escalating insecurity, the Bauchi State Government has shut down all public and private schools across the state, including federal and state-owned primary, secondary, and tertiary institutions. The directive was made public on Sunday evening in a statement released by Jalaludeen Usman, the Information and Public Relations Officer of the Bauchi State Ministry of Education.
“This decision, though difficult, was taken by the Government of Bauchi State after extensive consultations and in response to overwhelming security concerns affecting the safety of students, teachers, and school communities across the state,” Usman stated, referencing recent surges in violent attacks and mass abductions targeting educational facilities nationwide.
Usman stressed that the closure represents a moral imperative to safeguard vulnerable students and educational staff, noting, “The protection of our children remains our highest moral responsibility. Every student in Bauchi State deserves to learn in an environment that is safe, stable, and free of fear.” While acknowledging the inconvenience that may result from the shutdown, the government appealed to parents, guardians, school proprietors, and stakeholders for calm and cooperation during the period.
To reassure the public, the statement confirmed that the state is collaborating closely with security agencies to address the threat and intends to reopen schools as soon as it is safe to do so. “We call on parents, guardians, school proprietors, and all concerned stakeholders not to panic but to remain calm and supportive. The government is working swiftly and comprehensively to ensure that normal academic activities resume as soon as it is safe to do so,” Usman added.
Bauchi joins a growing list of northern states grappling with threats to school safety. Katsina, Plateau, and the federal government recently implemented similar closures in response to rising attacks, mass kidnappings, and violence directed at schools and religious institutions. Recent incidents include the abduction of at least 24 schoolgirls and the killing of a vice principal in Kebbi state, as well as the kidnapping of over 300 students and staff in Niger State.
The Bauchi State Government has promised ongoing updates as the security situation develops, reiterating its commitment to restoring safe learning environments for all students.
