On Friday night, at least six people lost their lives in a fatal crash between a passenger bus and a tipper along the Nawfia axis near Enugu-Agidi Junction, on the Awka–Onitsha expressway in Anambra State. The Anambra Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mrs. Bridget Asekhauno, confirmed the details to journalists in Awka, explaining that “the accident involved a yellow and black tipper, registration FGG21XV, and a red bus, registration XQ398AA, and resulted from reckless driving.”
According to eyewitnesses, the bus, which was returning from a Catholic Women Organisation burial in Ebonyi and headed for Onitsha, became involved in a head-on collision after the driver’s repeated dangerous overtaking attempts. Mrs. Asekhauno reported that a total of 32 passengers—nine men and 23 women—were on board. Two men and four women died in the crash, while five women sustained injuries. The remaining 21 passengers escaped unharmed. All casualties were taken to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu Teaching Hospital, where the fatalities were confirmed.
Responders swiftly cleared the accident site, restoring smooth traffic along the busy expressway. “This tragic incident highlights the devastating consequences of reckless driving,” Asekhauno warned, urging motorists to comply with traffic regulations, avoid aggressive overtaking, and always prioritize safety.
Similarly, eight people were killed and four others seriously injured in a collision along the Oyo/Ogbomoso highway on Tuesday night. According to Oyo State FRSC Sector Commander Mary Alo, “the accident occurred on Tuesday. Nineteen persons were involved. Eight died while four people are receiving treatment at the state hospital in Oyo town. Corpses of the victims were also at the morgue.” Survivors remain hospitalized as authorities continue their investigation into the sequence of events.
Both FRSC sector commanders reaffirmed their commitment to enforcing traffic laws, raising road safety awareness, and ensuring that rescue operations are timely and effective. They extended condolences to victims’ families and called on all road users to exercise extreme caution to prevent further loss of life on Nigerian highways.
